Changing society and public attitudes
Thanks to caring people like you, accessible healthcare has become an issue of public and political attention. Our 2025 ‘Still Ignored: The Fight for Accessible Healthcare’ report, revealed that deaf people and people with hearing loss are being left in the dark about their health.
Kate’s story
Dad was our anchor and our joy, but when cancer came into his life, being shut out as a deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user changed everything.
The day we went to A&E, dad was terrified. And when his test results came back, instead of arranging an interpreter, the doctors turned to me – heavily pregnant – and asked me to tell him he had cancer. It was traumatising.”

Sian’s story
When my hearing check result came up saying I may have signs of hearing loss, I didn’t really believe it. I later realised I’d gone almost 40 years without being able to hear properly.
I’ve missed so many conversations over the years, but thanks to the generosity of RNID’s supporters, I was able to access RNID’s hearing check. The result gave me the confidence I needed to approach my GP, and it was a moment that completely changed my life.”
