Your landline is going digital – here’s how to stay connected

A couple seated at their kitchen table looking at their landline phone.

By January 2027, the UK’s old copper landline network will be switched off and replaced with Digital Voice (VoIP), which uses your broadband instead of the traditional phone lines.

For most people, it’s as easy as plugging your phone into your router. But if you’re deaf, have hearing loss, tinnitus, or use assistive devices, a little preparation goes a long way.
Things for you to know:

  • Power matters: Digital lines need broadband and mains electricity. During a power cut, your landline may not work unless you have power backup.
  • Your phone number won’t change, and over 99% of handsets work with the new system.
  • If you don’t have broadband, it’s not a problem. Your broadband provider will offer a dedicated landline service, allowing customers to use their home phone in the same way they do today.
  • Textphones: Some will work, but sound quality could drop. Check your text phone with your provider and try the UK Relay service on your phone or computer.
  • Assistive devices: Make sure amplified phones, flashing alerts, care alarms, and pendant alarms will still function.
  • Pricing and plans remain unchanged, with added benefits like spam call blocking.
