Types of hearing aids

Overview

Hearing aids come in a range of shapes and sizes, but all work in a similar way.

They use microphones to pick up the sounds around you. A processing chip adjusts the sound digitally. The sounds are then amplified and played into your ear.

The right one for you will usually depend on your level of hearing loss. Your audiologist will help you find the best type of hearing aid for you. They will consider:

  • your hearing loss
  • the size of your ear canal
  • your lifestyle

You can get modern, good quality hearing aids for free on the NHS. Some types of hearing aids are only available to buy privately.
