RNID Connect Month 10: Deaf Culture

This month is all about asking more about your deaf friends’ lives. Get learning!

Get to know people better with these new words about Deaf culture.

Things to remember when using BSL

  • Remember to use facial expressions as well as signing with your hands – watch the videos carefully below. BSL users will read your face as well as your hands.
  • Remember to face the person you’re communicating with directly, so they can see you clearly.
  • Practice makes perfect. Practice BSL in front of a mirror, or with friends and family, to embed your learning.

Talk about deaf culture

We’d love to see how you’re getting on with RNID Connect – are you up for sharing your experience on social media?

A photo of you with the RNID Connect box or game cards would look great, or, if you’re feeling brave, you could show off your new signing skills. Below is a new phrase for you to learn – why not film yourself signing it and share it online?

Here’s a suggested caption you can use to accompany your photo or video on social media. Simply copy and paste it, or write your own message.

I started learning BSL with RNID 10 months ago. RNID Connect has taught me about deaf culture and how to be more deaf aware. I’d love to practise my new BSL skills with some others.

You can get yours at rnid.org.uk/connect #RNIDConnect

Don’t forget to tag RNID and use #RNIDConnect so we can see your posts.

Well done

You’ve completed another month of learning BSL. Every sign you use makes an enormous difference to BSL users. You’ll soon make a whole lot of connections – and a world of difference.
