Guidance for applying for an RNID Fellowship

This video provides information about the remit of our funding schemes and an overview of the application guidelines for the Fellowship scheme. This is followed by additional details about each stage of our assessment process to guide you with your application.

We spoke to current RNID fellow Dr Elisa Martelletti, to find out more about her Fellowship application experience, and her advice for future applicants. 

Application assessment criteria

When we send applications to external expert reviewers, we will ask them to comment on how well your application meets the following criteria. To give yourself the best chance of success, keep these criteria in mind while you write your application.  

The reviewers will consider the following:

• Application: How does this application meets the aims of the RNID Fellowship scheme? How suitable to the scheme is the proposed fellow and the host institute? (The scheme is aimed at supporting the career development of the UK’s most talented new investigators towards becoming independent scientists.)
• Research Area: How the research area is novel, timely and relevant to RNID. 
• Study Design: The quality of the submission, the background information and the experimental design of the project. 
• Previous work proposal is based on: How robust is the previous work that this proposal is based on?  
• Predicted outcomes: How likely is it that the predicted outcomes will; a) significantly advance the research field and; b) lead to benefits for people with hearing loss or hearing-related conditions?  
• Is the project time-scale reasonable? 
• Are the costs reasonable and well justified? 
• Ethically acceptable: Is the proposed work ethically acceptable, e.g. animal or patient welfare?
