Our runners have not only been covering hundreds of miles for training, but they have been raising thousands for RNID. Here are a few stories of why they decided to take on the challenge.

Dad running for his ‘little hero’

Neil from Stockport is running for his son. Noah was born with profound hearing loss and just before his 8th birthday he had cochlear implants fitted. Neil is running the TCS London Marathon to raise awareness of hearing loss and the impact it can have on people and families.

‘”We realised he could hear birds chirping, possibly for the first time. This stopped us in our tracks and any doubts we may have had before the surgery were silenced.

The work the RNID does to improve hearing aids and cochlear implants has helped Noah and continues to do so every day.”

Saskia seeking a challenge

At 22 years old, Saskia from Nottingham has set herself an incredible challenge – running the London Marathon in support of RNID.

Motivated by her own experience with hearing loss, Saskia is raising awareness and money for a cause close to her heart. Here, she shares her personal story and why she chose to run for RNID.

“I was inspired to run the London Marathon in support of RNID because I’ve experienced firsthand how hearing loss can impact someone’s life, and I wanted to make a difference. In 2023, I found out that I have severe hearing loss in my left ear, something I’ve had for as long as I can remember.

Now, with the help of a hearing aid, I can participate in conversations without it being a constant struggle. I’m also much more aware of my surroundings, and it has made a huge difference in how I experience the world.

Running the marathon is my way of challenging myself while also making a meaningful impact for others who are affected by hearing loss. I know that every step I take will help raise funds and awareness for RNID.”

Saskia encourages everyone who is considering taking on a challenge for RNID to go for it!
