Learn basic BSL

British Sign Language (BSL) is a visual language that uses gestures and facial expressions rather than words. It’s one of the UK’s original languages and it’s fun and easy for anyone to learn.

“I felt very inspired and a bit emotional by the power of learning some basic signs.” – Lizzie

Liz Whittington, an RNID supporter.

Become a deaf awareness ally

A man smiling and waving his hand.

Wherever you live in the UK, whatever your hearing status, you do know people who are deaf or have hearing loss. They could be your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, or customers. Do not let these connections slip away – RNID Connect can help you to strengthen your communication skills and become a deaf awareness ally.

“I started learning BSL 10 years ago as a hearing person with no links to the Deaf community. I love how knowing BSL means barriers are broken down and I can communicate with so many more people.

BSL is a rich and beautiful language, and I am so proud to be able to use it. I will never stop advocating for BSL – it opens barriers to communication and creates instant connections with strangers.”

– Abi, Trainee Sign Language Interpreter
