How to use video captions on social media

Captions make videos accessible for the 12 million people in the UK who are deaf or have hearing loss

They also benefit hearing people who prefer to view videos on mute, because they’re in a public place, aren’t wearing headphones or don’t want to disturb people around them.

We’ve created these guidelines using social media platforms on the most commonly used devices. Exact settings for each social media platform may differ depending on your personal device and app-based updates.

We got this information from the social media platforms themselves. We’ve tested it with users to make sure it’s easy to use.

We’ll update the information regularly to reflect the latest product updates. In the future, we’re also going to look at the apps and tools available to add subtitles to your content.
